RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Education voted recently to extend the contract of the district's acting superintendent.

Stephen Gainey, the school system's assistant superintendent for human resources, was named to the top post in September after the school board voted to fire Superintendent Tony Tata.

Gainey was expected to serve as acting superintendent only for 60 days while the board looked for an interim superintendent.

His contract in that role is up at the end of November, but board member Christine Kushner said Friday that the board voted to extend it until the end of the year.

The board must still look for a permanent replacement for Tata.
