CARY, N.C. — Wake County school board members unanimously approved a proposed $1.4 billion operating budget Tuesday evening that includes raises for teachers and staff.

The board's budget proposal includes a $48.3 million increase from 2014-15 funding.

Board members, including Jim Martin, see the salary increases as an attempt to better the system.

"There are a lot of programming needs that need to get addressed to get to be the school system we all want to be," he said.

The budget now goes before county commissioners.
