RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County school system has received almost $3.6 million from the U.S. Department of Education to support its magnet schools program, officials said Friday.

The award marks the first year of a three-year grant. Officials said the money would assist Garner High School and East Garner Middle School with the International Baccalaureate programs and would allow Southeast Raleigh High School to make some instructional improvements.

The federal Magnet Schools Assistance Program is providing 41 programs nationwide with $100 million in grants. Cumberland County schools received more than $1.7 million under the program, while Guilford County and Forsyth County schools received $1.5 million and $1.6 million, respectively.
