With the new student assignment plan in Wake County, the system's magnet school application timeline is accelerated this year.

Instead of applying for a magnet school in February, the application period is now in December. Applicants will learn the results by mid-January when the new school choice selection period begins.

If you want to learn more about the process, go to Wake County's magnet program website.

If you're interested in applying, there are some events in the coming weeks that you'll want to attend.

  • Project Enlightenment, 501 S. Boylan Ave. near downtown Raleigh, will hold a parents morning out event this week. Parents of rising kindergartners can visit with parents from magnet elementary schools to learn more about the programs. It's from 10 a.m. to noon, Thursday.
  • The magnet school fair is from 9 a.m. to noon, Nov. 5, at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School, 2600 Rock Quarry Rd., Raleigh. Representatives from all magnet schools - elementary, middle and high school - will be there with information about their programs, the application process and school tour dates. I attended the fair a couple of years ago when my older daughter was a rising kindergartner and found it very helpful.
  • Magnet schools will host open houses with informational sessions and guided tours in November (which I, again, recommend if you're considering a magnet school). Magnet elementary schools will hold open houses at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Nov. 10. Magnet middle schools will hold open houses at 9 a.m. and noon, Nov. 15. (Moore Square Magnet Middle is the one exception, with open houses at 9 a.m. and noon, Dec. 6).
High schools have different schedules. The Wake-NCSU STEM Early College High School will hold an open house at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 7; Southeast Raleigh Magnet High is 6:30 p.m., Nov. 14; Enloe is 6:30 p.m., Nov. 15; Wake Early College High School is 6:30 p.m., Nov. 16; Garner IB Magnet High School is 6:30 p.m., Nov. 17; and Millbrook IB Magnet High School is 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., Nov. 17. High schools also will hold open houses in January.
For more information about these events and the magnet system, check Wake's website.
