Wake Cops Are Tops in Tagging Drunken Drivers

Wake County lead the way with the most drunken-driving citations during a statewide crackdown around the Fourth of July.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Police issued the more citations for drunken driving in Wake County than anywhere else in the state during a crackdown around the Fourth of July, said offiicals.

During Booze It & Lose It: Operation Firecracker, police said they issued 159 citations for driving while impaired to motorists in Wake County.

Mecklenberg County came in second with 124 citations, followed by New Hanover County at 79.

State and local law-enforcement officers gave out 2,129 DWI citiations statewide during the campaign, which ran June 28-July 8.

"I commend the state and local law-enforcement officers who took part in this life-saving campaign to remove impaired drivers from our roads," said Gov. Mike Easley. "Their continued dedication to highway safety helped protect motorists across the state throughout the Foruth of July period."

Officers said they also issued 71,048 citations for offenses ranging from safety belt and speeding violations to drug charges.
