Coach Jon Scheyer reacts to Duke's setback against NC State in a post-game interview
In a post-game interview, coach Jon Scheyer reacts to Duke's setback against NC State.
The love. And at this time, ladies and gentlemen, we'll have from Duke University coach John Shire and student athletes, Mark Mitchell and Kyle Filipowski. Let me start. Uh, yes, sir. We start off with coaches, uh, state. Ok. Uh, well, obviously, look, that's disappointing. You know, it's a disappointing loss for us. We wanted to make a run at this thing and, uh, coming off of Saturday, um, you know, we've been able to spend a lot of time on ourselves for the first time and, you know, that didn't translate fully clearly. You know, NC State is playing the best basketball they've played probably, and, uh, you give them credit, they're talented, uh, when you're playing in the postseason, teams don't want to go away, you have to make them go away and, um, overall, like I can go through the details of the game. I think, I think for us though, it's about the, the competitive fire you need to have in the postseason. And, uh, you know, I told these guys, one, I think both these guys, um, were big time competitors today. They almost willed us to win the game. You know, they're playing a lot of minutes, uh, you know, combined, they, they have 46 and 22 but I just thought they had the, the will to win, which is what you need. But we didn't have that collectively overall. And for us it's, we have to go get back to it and work and the biggest postseason is ahead of us and we're going to be in the tournament. We're excited about that. I don't know where we're gonna go, what seed we're gonna be. Um, but my thing is all about getting ready and focused for that. So obviously, I'll answer any questions these guys will answer. Uh, but it's disappointing and, uh, when you get back to work, bottom line, gonna get back to work and figure this out. Ok. The first question is gonna be the gentleman here. Hey coach, um, Josh Segal Wnyu, there's some seem to be some confusion coming from both benches at the sequence where they called the technical but not the basket interference. What was the explanation that you got from the officials on that? The, the officials did their job, you know, it's just the, the rule needs to be changed, you know, the rule is, it's, it's basically, it's a dead ball play, you know, and so it goes possession, it doesn't go to our possession. It's a, it's a, it's a strange play because I told them I don't want the tech then give us the ball, you know, it's better to have the ball get a chance to score. We're, we're gonna score two or three or have the opportunity to. Uh but the, the officials did their job. It's a rule that should be changed. Uh But they did what they were supposed to do. Ok, gentlemen, in fifth row there, you know, Ro M Lam with inside pack sports. Kyle, I spoke to DJ BURNS. He had high regard for you spoke lovingly of you. How fun was that competition today? And um just, you know, your thoughts on that. Yeah, I mean, you know, D DJ Burns is a, one of one type of player and, um, you know, just the way he plays is very unique. You gotta, you gotta always be prepared for, for something he throws at you. Um, so, I mean, you know, credit to him because like I said, he's, he's gonna have a player as well and, and it's always a about going up against him too. Ok. Fifth row Adam goin orange Fizz Kyle and Mark. This is for both of you. How do you use a loss like this for motivation moving forward? And what did you learn about yourselves going into the NCAA tournament? Yeah, I mean, for, for me, at least, you know, this is, I mean, it's, it's even more of a wake up call because, you know, we have, we could just have one more game left for the season now. And, um, you know, you may have, have high expectations um just with winning the, the AC C and, and, and things like that, but you gotta really, you gotta really see the reality of it and see that every team is really fighting for their lives. And we just have to, we, we have to want it more than any other team that we play against. Yeah, obviously, um it hurts to lose a game like this, But I think we just got to use this motivation and just um go back to the drawing board. Obviously, we're gonna have some time to really work on some things like ourselves in the mirror and see we can do better and uh hopefully next week we can start our run in the tournament. Ok. Gently. Uh yeah. Coach Matt Truck and I from her FM Sports radio, uh with this loss that you had and since you are going into the tournament, how will you prepare your team mentally for the NCAA tournament? Well, one, you have to digest the laws still and think about, um you know, you want to watch this film and digest and think about where our team is at. Uh But it would be a real problem if you didn't believe in the team. You know, I think it starts there. Do you believe in the group you have, do you believe in the team? And the answer is emphatically 100%. Yes, it starts there for me then it's a matter of, um, all these guys, obviously as a staff too, taking responsibility, you have to take responsibility for what we didn't do tonight. Because, you know, I've told these guys, like after the game Saturday, you know, I mentioned my belief, but also it's what you can control. And I don't feel we handled what we could control tonight, no doubt in my mind. And so if we want that feeling a week from now where you lose or you exit the tournament where you didn't control what you can control, that would be a real shame. And I'm not going down that way. I know these guys aren't going down that way. And so for us it's back to work, you know, that you're not going to be prepared if you don't work. Uh, but it starts with the belief and, and the responsibility for me. Ok. Uh, fourth row here, Josh Graham Wsgs coach Jared's deal kind of seemed like a bad Omen in pregame warmups. When were you made aware of that? And given the eight points he put up, do you think it bothered him during the game? Jared wasn't himself? No doubt, Jared will say he's fine because he doesn't make excuses. Uh, that was a strange thing that happened in warm ups and he just banged heads, you know, him and Jalen and, uh, he needs some stitches before the game. Just, he didn't have the same pop like he normally does. And, uh, those are the kinds of things that can happen though. You hope it, hopefully we don't bang heads before the next game we play, but some stuff like that can happen. But I thought Jared wasn't him, his normal self. You know, he's been as consistent and as dependable as anybody. And, uh, again, he was fine tonight, but he wasn't the way he normally is. And I do think that played a part. Ok, Young Lane Rachel Kaplan, Duke Carle, um, coach on Saturday, you talked a little bit about how Carolina came out and hit you first. Um, and that adjustment wasn't really something that came to fruition tonight. Can you talk a little bit about what you need to do to get your team ready to come out strong? Um, moving into the tournament? Yeah, it's, it's happened three games in a row and, uh, that's a concern. That's a big concern. I mean, even the start of the second half was the same way. And so as a coach, we have to, I have to figure out how to get that message across better or differently or, um, I mean, these guys know, we talk about a lot, we work on it a lot. Um, but there's a, each part of the season, you have different levels to it, you know, so you have nonconference play, then you have AC C play, then you have the AC C tournament which goes up, then you have the NCAA tournament. So you have to keep, you, you can't do the same thing. You have to keep raising your level and that's the thing we didn't do tonight. And, uh, but we're gonna fix it bottom line. Like you have to figure out a way, get back to work, watch a film, learn, uh, practice and be ready to do it whoever we play. And whenever we play, and gentlemen in front coach David Glenn from the North Carolina Sports Network, you were a great guard in this league and in this tournament, your guards just 10 days ago were central to you beating the wolfpack by 15 points in Raleigh. What changed? And what's your message to those guys after this? Well, those guys, we need them to be better. You know, we, we rely on them to do so much for us and it's not, it's not the scoring, it's everything else. It's the poise, it's the rebounding, it's the guarding, it's the, it's everything else that comes with it. And, uh I've seen all of them do it, have it at different points. Um, but we need to, we need it every game. You know, we just, we don't have a team where we're not wearing you down with our depth necessarily. So we need those five guys to that start. We need them to come out with such force right away. And, uh, clearly we didn't have that tonight and uh, I wish I had the answer for you. I can't tell you why, uh, is Jeremy Roach important to our team? Absolutely. Tyrese Jared, we need those guys to play at a high level like they have for the majority of the year. And, uh, that's the bottom line. Ok. Now, last question, we'll be here, uh, Zach Ply for CBS, sports for Kyle and Mark, you guys have been to the postseason before. You've been through ups and downs. What's kind of the message to your teammates the next few days in terms of not getting too down knowing that there's still big goals ahead of you. Yeah, I mean, especially just with, with how the end of the season went last year with winning the AC C but, you know, losing in the first weekend. Um, it's, I, I it's just, uh, you know, just knowing that there's not many opportunities left and you got to make the most of them. Um, just really gotta embrace it, be all in with each other. Uh, that's really the most important thing just playing for each other knowing that, that you got put on the line with one another, um, because it can, it can be gone just like that and, and, you know, you can look back and regret some things, but we don't want to be that team. We wanna, we want to go to, to Phoenix. We, we, we've had those ambitions since the beginning of the season. So still, um, you know, we, we, we got a good shot in that we put ourselves in a, a good enough position and, you know, there's no excuses moving forward for that. Yeah, I think I would just, um, I think I'll just tell the guys just to cherish the moments and, uh, obviously not in like a sentimental way, but just on the court, you know, every, every time we get to play, just, um, I appreciate it and I think if we do that, we'll go all out for it. And I think, um, at times with our team this season, I think we've just expected things to come and, you know, just, I remember last year just how sudden it ended and obviously it was a little different path, just how sudden it was. I, I think if we just cherish what we have in each and every day and win each and every day going forward, um I think we do something special. Ok. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Uh, the Duke's uh locker room is open just for approximately 20 minutes. Ladies and gentlemen.
