SMITHFIELD, N.C. — An early-morning fire damaged a building belonging to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Smithfield Monday.

Smithfield Fire Chief Patrick Harris said firefighters got to the VFW building at 212 W. Rose St. within seven minutes of a 911 call reporting the fire at 1:09 a.m. Crews labored for a couple hours to extinguish the blaze.

About a quarter of the building was damaged, but no one was injured. Harris said firefighters saved as much of the VFW's belongings, including flags, plaques and pictures, as they could.

Harris said the fire was not suspicious, although its exact cause hasn't been determined. The building was unoccupied when the fire started.
