Veterans Day, fundraisers highlight weekend best bets

There are plenty of events this weekend to celebrate Veterans Day, along with some fundraisers that are fun and support great causes.

There are plenty of events this weekend to celebrate Veterans Day, along with some fundraisers that are fun and support great causes.

Heroes Homecoming

A general view of the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall outside the Airborne & Special Operations Museum in Fayetteville, NC. The Wall is a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial located in Washington, D.C. The exhibit is a part of the Heroes Homecoming, honoring Vietnam Veterans as the biggest commemoration/reunion of its kind for 10 days leading up to Veterans Day 2011.

What better way to support our troops and show appreciation for our veterans than the Fayetteville Veterans Day Parade? The parade starts at 10 a.m. this Saturday and will be broadcast live on WRAL-TV and WRAL.com. The three-day Heroes Homecoming celebration in Fayetteville has many more events, including the opening ceremony of North Carolina Veterans Park, Family Day, a flag dedication ceremony and a POW/MIA vigil.

Grand Prix

The Duke Children’s Hospital Grand Prix is Saturday at the Hunt Horse Arena at the Fairgrounds. Come watch the best riders on the East Coast compete for $30,000 in prize money in high-caliber show jumping competitions starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 per person, and children 10 and under are free. Proceeds from the horse show benefit Duke Children's Hospital in Durham.

Couture for a Cause

Activate Good’s fourth annual Couture for a Cause Fashion Show is Saturday night at Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. Local designers are teaming up with Activate Good’s nonprofit partners to create outfits inspired by those organization’s causes. There will also be hors d’oeuvres, live and silent auctions, a cash bar and live entertainment. Today is the last day to purchase advance tickets online for $25. Tickets at the door are $30.

Carolina Collector Auto Fest

The Carolina Collector Auto Fest celebrates its twenty-fifth year at the State Fairgrounds today through Sunday. Check out cars from every era and hang around tonight to hear live music from Keith Henderson. Admission on Saturday and Sunday is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, and military. Kids 10 and under get in for free. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Diabetes Association of Raleigh.
