Vandalism causes sewer overflow in Raleigh

City staff were alerted to the overflow from a sewer main next to 106 WineSap Place at 5:50 p.m. Friday.

The overflow was stopped by 9 p.m. that night. However, authorities estimated the overflow had occurred for approximately five days before being reported.

During that time, an estimated 48,000 gallons of sewage entered a private water impoundment and an unnamed tributary of Marsh Creek.

The overflow was caused by vandalism to a sanitary sewer manhole, authorities said.
