ROXBORO, N.C. — A guard and three inmates from the Caswell Correctional Center in Yanceyville were hospitalized Tuesday after being hit by a car while on clean-up duty along U.S. Highway 501 south of Roxboro.

According to the state Highway Patrol, the men were picking up trash along the southbound lanes of the road at about 9:40 a.m. when Mark Crabtree, of Alton, Va., lost control of his van and hit them.

Inmates Lamont Hampton, Maurice Smothers and Remarto Rodgers and guard David Reeves were transported to area hospitals. None of their injuries were deemed life-threatening, troopers said.
