Unstable air could help produce thunderstorms Wednesday afternoon

Warmer, more unstable air will push into central and eastern North Carolina during the day on Wednesday, making strong to severe thunderstorms a possibility as high temperatures climb into the 70s.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Warmer, more unstable air will push into central and eastern North Carolina during the day on Wednesday, making strong to severe thunderstorms a possibility as high temperatures climb into the 70s.

Bands of showers pushed through the area throughout the morning, and those will continue in the afternoon.

All of central and eastern North Carolina is under a marginal risk for severe weather on Wednesday.

"Wind damage is possible, and an isolated tornado is not out of the question," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "We haven't had any thunderstorms lately, so this will be something to watch."

Additional showers or storms are possible Wednesday afternoon and evening before the area starts to clear out for the final two days of the work week.

Highs Thursday will once again climb into the 70s before cooler air arrives behind a cold front.

Temperatures will be in the mid-60s on Friday and Saturday, and ghouls and goblins will enjoy pleasant trick-or-treating weather on Halloween.

"The weekend looks very pleasant in terms of fall-like temperatures," Gardner said. "Sunday could include a shower or two, but it won't be a washout."
