One person is dead and four others injured following a single-car crash on Interstate 95.

Highway Patrol officers responded to an accident on an exit ramp of the northbound side of Interstate 95 at about 7:45 p.m. Friday.

Brian Strickland with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety said that a 2008 Pontiac G5 driven by Qiaonan Xiao, 22, of China was traveling north on Interstate 95 and entered the off ramp that leads to North Carolina Highway 87 north. Xiao failed sufficiently reduce speed to handle the curve of the road and ran off the left side of the roadway, said Strickland.

Xiao’s vehicle lost control and overturned, coming to a rest on its roof along the shoulder of the road. Five people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and all were students at UNC Pembroke, said Strickland.

Front passenger Huang Yao Gui, 20, of St. Pauls, North Carolina and rear passenger Yifei Dai, 20 were trapped inside the vehicle when it overturned and Dai was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gui, Xiao and two other passengers identified as Lin Ding, 19, of China, and Zhang Gaoqi, 19, of China, were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment.

Gui remained hospitalized with critical injuries Sunday night.

UNC Pembroke campus officials are assisting in the investigation of the case. No charges had been filed as of Sunday night.
