UNC adding Wayne Memorial to hospital network
Wayne Memorial Hospital will soon join UNC Health Care's network, after the hospital board voted Tuesday to sign a management contract with the Chapel Hill-based health system.

The deal doesn't involve any sale or exchange of assets, and the hospital board will retain local governance of Wayne Memorial, officials said. No layoffs are planned.
"Our decision today signifies Wayne Memorial Hospital’s commitment to provide the best health care possible for all of our patients," Jim Parker, chairman of the Wayne Memorial Hospital Board, said in a statement. "An affiliation with UNC Health Care will allow us to be better prepared to meet the challenges of the future and will strengthen our position as a community hospital."
The hospital board announced in September that it was gauging interest from larger hospital systems about forming a partnership, which could help Wayne Memorial cut costs, enhance patient care and increase hospital-based clinical services.
"We are pleased to affiliate with Wayne Memorial Hospital and welcome them into our system," Dr. William Roper, chief executive of UNC Health Care, said in a statement. "This partnership combines the successful health care delivery at Wayne Memorial Hospital with the managerial experience and capabilities of our system."
Wayne Memorial President and CEO Bill Paugh announced in February that he planned to retire at the end of the year, so UNC Health Care and the hospital board will appoint an interim leader as they undertake a search for a permanent president and CEO, officials said.
