Two wounded at Fayetteville house party

Officers responded to 1621 Stanhope St. at about 1:25 a.m. and found that a disturbance occurred at a party that ended in gunfire in the street in front of the house.

Two people were taken by private vehicles to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where they were listed in good condition.

After a string of shootings at house parties in recent months that left four people dead, Fayetteville police in June launched Operation Safe Summer to monitor such events more closely. The effort involves officers working overtime to respond to complaints about parties that haven't been registered with Fayetteville police.

Although the Fayetteville City Council passed an ordinance that requires citizens to register house parties on the police department's website, many events go unregistered. In conjunction with Operation Safe Summer, the council passed another ordinance to fine property owners $500 each time officers have to respond to an unregistered house party after the first offense.

Police said Sunday they couldn't confirm whether the Stanhope Street party had been registered.
