TARBORO, N.C. — School leaders sent a crisis counseling team to Tarboro High School Monday where students learned of a weekend wreck that claimed the life of a recent graduate and left his companion hospitalized.

Dassreyk Hagans, of the Class of 2009, was killed early Sunday in a wreck on McNair Road in Edgecombe County, according to school principal Dr. Lisa Cooke. Iesha Moore was listed in fair condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

Tarboro police said Hagan was driving at about 60 mph when he ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and lost control. He was wearing his seatbelt but Moore was not, police said.

Counselors from across the district set up a meeting area for students in the cafeteria. Band director Madeline Frankenhauser said the news hit band members especially hard since Hagans had been a member of the group.

“This has been a tough morning for our kids and staff alike," Cooke said in a statement.

She added that the school would call each home to notify parents of the situation.
