Two shot during robbery of Cumberland gaming parlor
Two men were shot early Wednesday during a robbery of an illegal gambling and sweepstakes operation in the Fayetteville area, authorities said.
Posted — UpdatedThe robbery occurred at about 2:30 a.m. at 4557 Cumberland Road, authorities said. It was unclear if the wounded men, who were in intensive care at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, were the suspected robbers or patrons or employees of the gaming parlor.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office has been cracking down on video sweepstakes businesses for several months, and Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler said they have moved into residential areas to hide from deputies.
"I am very concerned about robberies, other crimes of violence and other criminal activity associated with these illegal gambling operations," Butler said in a statement. "This illegal gambling operation was going on in a neighborhood and next to a church. This makes it clear that such activity cannot continue to be tolerated and that we need the help of the public in reporting these kinds of actions to us so that we can investigate and stop crime.”
Deputies seized four sweepstakes machines and other gambling paraphernalia while investigating the Cumberland Road shooting, authorities said.
