DURHAM, N.C. — An 89-year-old husband and 85-year-old wife missing from a Durham home were found safe Sunday night.

A Silver Alert was issued early Sunday for Willie Bias McLeod and  Evelyn Louise McLeod, who had last been seen at 2709 Independence Ave.

Later Sunday, police in Mocksville saw the couple in a silver Chevrolet Impala that was being driven erratically. When police ran the car's license plate, it matched that of the McLeods' car.

Police said the two are unharmed, and relatives drove out to Mocksville to pick them up Sunday night.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered people who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
