Two hurt, one charged in Smithfield shootings

Two people were hurt early Sunday during a shooting at a Smithfield apartment complex.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A man is facing charges in a shooting at a Smithfield apartment complex that sent two people to the hospital early Sunday.

Johnell Andrew Padgett, 23, is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection and was held at the Johnston County jail under a $100,000 secured bond.

Smithfield police said officers were dispatched to the apartments on Kay Drive about 1:30 a.m. and found two men in their 20s who had been shot – one in the leg and the other in the torso. The injuries were not life-threatening, and police said both men were in stable condition.
