FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Two people were taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center early Tuesday after they escaped a burning home on Van Dyke Place, Fayetteville fire officials said.

Firefighters were called to the home shortly before 6 a.m. Authorities said the people inside were alerted by a smoke detector, but flames prevented them from leaving through the front door.

They were able to break out through a bedroom window and escape shortly before firefighters arrived. Their names have not been released, but fire officials said they were transferred to the Burn Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, where they were in critical condition.

It's unclear what caused the fire, which originated in the living room, but an investigation is ongoing.
