Two cyclists hurt in Cary hit-and-run; suspect pulled bike off his windshield

Christopher Moore, 33, of Page Street, was charged with two counts of felony hit and run, authorities said. He was being held at the Wake County jail under a $100,000 bond.

Cary police responded to the crash on High House Road near Bond Park at about 6:45 p.m. Monday. Authorities said four cyclists were traveling toward Old Apex Road when a vehicle driving in the same direction ran over two of them.

"The two were in the street on bicycles, and someone drove by and hit them in a car and drove off," a man told a 911 dispatcher.

Another man called 911 to report that a man in maroon Saturn stopped in his neighborhood to discard a bike that was on the hood of his car.

"A guy just came in my neighborhood with a bicycle stuck to his windshield. I’m not sure if he hit somebody," the caller told the dispatcher. "The windshield was cracked.

"He threw (the bicycle) out, and I said, ‘Is everything OK?’ And he said, ‘Yeah,’" the caller said, adding that the man drove off quickly, hitting a mailbox on his way out.

The two injured cyclists were identified as Ginny Davis, 55, of Cary, and Lori Cove, 48, of Raleigh. Both were taken to WakeMed with serious injuries, but their conditions weren't known Wednesday.

The two other cyclists were not injured.

The group of four cyclists had met before their evening ride at Cycling Spoken Here in Cary, where people were heartbroken Tuesday about the hit-and-run.

"It could just as easily be me or any of the other guys who ride out of the shop or work for the shop," store manager Jacob Williams said. "Even my parents, they live down in Florida. They ride quite a bit nowadays. So, I don't want to see anything happen to them either. One person gets hurt, everybody feels it."

Cove is director of transportation and facilities for Cary, officials said. Town employees called the experienced cyclist, who recently finished Ironman triathlons in both Tennessee and Spain, amazing and awesome.

Davis, also an experienced cyclist, was described as a bright light who always has a smile and a hug for everyone.

Moore has a lengthy criminal record dating to 2000, including six convictions for driving while impaired and one each for driving with a revoked license and speeding to elude arrest.

A woman who answered the door at his home Tuesday declined to comment.
