Two charged in string of bank parking lot muggings
Police said Tuesday that they have filed charges in two recent attempted robberies in Wells Fargo Bank parking lots in Durham.

Vernon Toomer, 40, of Morreene Road, was charged with attempted common-law robbery, conspiracy and possession of a stolen vehicle in an April 8 incident at the Wells Fargo branch at 3600 N. Duke St.
A man tried to grab a deposit bag from a woman as she got out of her car, knocking the woman to the ground. The would-be robber fled without the bag when three bystanders went to help the woman, police said.
Duane Curtis Bond, 43, of Maymount Drive, was charged with attempted common-law robbery and felony conspiracy in an April 12 incident at the same Wells Fargo branch.
A man tried to grab a deposit bag from another woman but he fled when she screamed and tossed the bag inside the bank, police said.
Bond, who is being held in the Alamance County jail after being charged in an April 23 robbery outside a Wells Fargo branch in Mebane, also was charged with common-law robbery and felony conspiracy in connection with three March incidents in Durham:
- A man leaving the SunTrust Bank branch at 5112 N. Roxboro St. was robbed on March 12.
- A woman was robbed of a bank deposit bag outside Northgate Mall on March 15.
- A man was robbed of a deposit bag outside the SunTrust branch at 2008 E. N.C. Highway 54 on March 18.
No charges have been filed in an April 15 robbery attempt outside a Wells Fargo branch at 2821 Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd., police said.
