Tuesday Wrap: The Late Show
With the crossover deadline bearing down on them, House members on Tuesday held the latest - literally - in a series of marathon sessions, ending at about 11 p.m. after they had taken up more than three dozen bills.
Posted — UpdatedAmong the measures in the late-night debate, the House approved a measure that would allow deer hunting with firearms on Sundays. The bill split both parties, with some saying people should be allowed to hunt any day of the week and others saying Sunday should remain a day of rest.
Another bill pit former school board members against former county commissioners, but the House defeated a proposal to strip school boards of their power to sue commissioners over funding fights.
Earlier in the day, a House committee approved bills that would loosen state and local gun restrictions and would allow executions to take place without the presence of a physician. Both bills are expected on the House floor on Wednesday.
In the Senate, a committee approved legislation calling for the teaching of the gold standard in high school while turning aside a proposal that would have ratcheted up the teaching course loads of professors in the University of North Carolina system.
