Tuesday Wrap: Not quite a SEANC view
The longtime director of the State Employees Association of North Carolina resigned Tuesday, one day after the Wake County district attorney asked for a state investigation into spending at the organization.
Posted — UpdatedAlthough SEANC officials said their own investigation turned up no wrongdoing, Dana Cope said he had blurred the line between his personal and professional life and didn't want to interfere with the group's efforts to present the concerns of state workers to lawmakers.
Lawmakers themselves caught some flak Tuesday from drivers over a proposal to rejigger the formula used to calculate the state gas tax.
The tax would drop from 37.5 cents to 35 cents per gallon on March 1 but would remain there, eliminating any potential savings that drivers would have seen at the pump later this year, when the tax was expected to drop to 30.4 cents per gallon. Over the next four years, the changes were expected to raise $1.2 billion for road and bridge construction and maintenance – surprisingly the same figure Gov. Pat McCrory has attached to a proposed bond he wants for transportation projects.
Finally, the General Assembly's website appeared to be back online Tuesday evening. Some of its functions were still linked to the former ncleg.net domain, which had expired, leading visitors who checked the site early in the day to a placeholder page.
