Tuesday Wrap: Calm after the storm
After a day filled with rallies in favor of House Bill 2 and arrests of people protesting the law, Tuesday was fairly calm at the Legislative Building.
Posted — UpdatedA group of rabbis held a Passover prayer service with lawmakers after calling for a repeal of the law, which precludes discrimination protections from being extended to gay and transgender people. Episcopal and Methodist bishops also have called for a repeal.
Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest is running on House Bill 2, building his first campaign ad around the law. Meanwhile, Sen. Buck Newton, R-Wilson, a candidate for attorney general, dismissed criticism of comments he made during a pro-House Bill 2 rally on Monday.
Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Henderson, said lawyers are looking at the possibility of putting a referendum including the provisions of House Bill 2 on the November ballot.
In non-House Bill 2 news, the Senate Finance Committee discussed three technical bills but not a proposal to increase the standard deduction on income tax returns.
