Tuesday Wrap: Bottom line is bottom line
Budget held hostage: Day 49. Finally, a breakthrough, as House and Senate negotiators reach a deal on how much to spend during the 2015-16 fiscal year.
Posted — UpdatedThe two sides agreed to a bottom line of $21.74 billion, but they still need to figure out where to spend that sum. The deadline for passing a final budget is Aug. 31.
In the legislature, a House committee approved a bill that calls for the Community College System to design and oversee remedial education courses that high school seniors would take to ensure they meet reading, writing and math benchmarks before graduating.
Meanwhile, the state NAACP said they plan to join a march from Selma, Ala., to Washington, D.C., and could conduct "Moral Monday" protests in Congress over voting rights. Also, a school choice group has been soliciting parents statewide to sign up for the Opportunity Scholarships school voucher program.
