Trucker charged after mother, daughter killed in Oxford crash

A tractor-trailer operated by Michael L. Green was eastbound on U.S. Highway 158, also known as Oxford Loop Road, shortly after 10:30 a.m. when it ran a red light at N.C. Highway 96 and hit a southbound vehicle, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

After colliding with the car, the tractor-trailer struck a second passenger vehicle, which was traveling north on N.C. 96, authorities said. The tractor-trailer pushed the second vehicle several yards down the roadway before coming to a final rest on top of it, they said.

Lou Hedspeth Rawls and her daughter, Bobbi Wilson, who were the only occupants of the second vehicle, died at the scene. Wilson was the longtime clerk to the Granville County Board of Commissioners.

"Bobbi was somebody that would talk to you about anything. She was a friend, and if anything, she was a true friend," Commissioner Dave Currin said. "She cared about this county, and she was the queen of this county in some regards."

The driver of the first vehicle hit suffered minor injuries.

Green was arrested and charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and a stop light violation. He was given a $10,000 secured bond.

The truck is owned by ECMD Inc., a North Wilkesboro-based building products firm. The company issued a statement Tuesday offering condolences to Rawls' and Wilson's family and friends but declining further comment because officials don't know all the details of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
