SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Dozens of trucks and drivers were taken off the road Wednesday and Thursday during a crackdown on commercia- vehicle violations, authorities said.

Operation Road Watch, a 48-hour enforcement effort focusing on commercial vehicles, has the goal of reducing collisions involving big trucks and other vehicles.

Highway Patrol troopers and Johnston County deputies inspected 557 commercial vehicles on Interstates 40 and 95 and found 261 driver violations and 583 truck violations. Sixty-six drivers and 69 trucks were ordered off the road.
