ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Authorities are trying to identify two people killed in a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 95, east of Roanoke Rapids, early Christmas day, state troopers said.

Sgt. Maj. Tony Cameron said that a 1998 Ford Escort ran off the right side of I-95 South, near mile marker 168, shortly after 2 a.m. The driver apparently overcorrected and lost control of the car, sending it into the median, he said. It crashed into a tree and caught on fire.

The victims were found in the car and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cameron said they believe they know who the victims are and are working with relatives to make a positive identification.

The car was too badly damaged to tell if they were wearing seat belts, he said.
