Troopers ID teen hit by car in Smithfield

A person killed while walking along a road in Smithfield on Sunday has been identified as a local teen.

SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has identified a identified a person killed Sunday while walking along a road in Smithfield.

Troopers said Tuesday that Jonathan Barbour, 16, of 6232 Swift Creek Road in Smithfield, was walking east on Black Creek Road shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday when he was hit by a Ford mustang. A preliminary investigation shows Barbour was wearing dark clothing and struck from behind.

Troopers released a detailed description of Barbour on Monday and asked for the public’s help in identifying him. They did not say whether tips from the public led to his identification.

Troopers said evidence in the case so far has not led investigators to pursue charges against the driver.
