DURHAM, N.C. — State troopers arrested two drivers – an adult and a teen – after a car stunt show that shut down part of Interstate 40 late Saturday night. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol did not release the names of those arrested.

Video captured and shared on social media showed a crowd gathered to watch donuts, burnouts and spin moves, tire squealing and smoke billowing into the air.

The action took place around 11 p.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of I-40 between the Page Road exit and I-540, near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Live streams on Instagram are filled with cheering and encouragement. "We got the highway shutdown," one fan yells.

Emergency dispatchers relayed to police messages from callers stopped on the interstate.

"Be advised: They’re still stopped right now. One of the vehicles is doing donuts in the middle of the interstate, and there’s a male subject in the roadway with a bullhorn telling all the vehicles to stay still," one radio broadcast says.

"This was a deliberate and preplanned event," said First Sgt. Christopher Knox, a Highway Patrol spokesman. "It makes me mad. I see that, and I think of the people out there just trying to get from point A to point B.

"It didn’t last very long, but it lasted too long," he said. "This is not a game. The interstate is not a place to play."

One of the people involved in the interstate takeover told WRAL News they weren't thinking about the traffic behind them in the moment.

As the drivers scattered, troopers chased down two vehicles, arrested the drivers and confiscated their cars. They warn that more arrests could be coming.

"For those that would think of doing something this outrageous and dangerous and childish, we want them to know there are repercussions," Knox said.
