Triangle to host three-pronged math challenge for kids

The first statewide Mathnasium Triathlon is set for Oct. 2 and will feature a math competiion for third through seventh graders.

As the name suggests, the triathlon will feature three events which focus on different math concepts that kids should master in each grade. The events are: The Counting Game, which tests a student's ability to count from any number to any number by any number; Magic Squares, where students are awarded points for creativity in developing their own math problems; and Mental Math Workout, which asks students to solve given problems without pencil and paper.

There is still time to register your kids for the event. The deadline is Friday. It's $15 to register The competitions will be held at a dozen Mathnasium Learning Centers, where kids can go to boost their math skills, across North Carolina. The top three place winners of each grade level will be invited to compete at the state finals on Oct. 17 on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.

All competitors will get a T-shirt and goody bag. Top winners will receive a medal and invitation to the state finals. Winners in the state finals and their school math programs will receive cash prizes.
