Triangle schools consider make-up days after wintry weather

Since buses were already on the road last Tuesday when Wake County public schools’ officials canceled school, that day does not have to be made up. But school officials still have to determine what to do about the other three canceled days last week.

Wake students almost missed four days the week before. Those are being made up by extending two early-release days.

Wake County public schools' website says officials were able to preserve spring break for traditional calendar students, but that could change after additional missed days last week. There was no word on when the Wake school district will make a decision about that make-up time.

Durham Public Schools’ Board of Education plans to meet Monday afternoon to talk about making up days from the first week of snow. They are considering adding two days to the end of the school year for traditional school students.

State law requires that public schools must end by the Friday closest to June 11 and that students receive 1,025 instructional hours. Wake County school officials say they were already above that number, which is why they only have to make up one of the four days missed between Feb 17-20.
