Triangle Foodie News: Ice cream shop opens in City Market

RALEIGH, N.C. — Treat ice cream shop opens its doors today in City Market in downtown Raleigh. The shop serves hormone-free and antibiotic-free Maple View Farm ice cream and sorbet, locally made in Hillsborough. The shop will have grand opening specials on Friday including 50 percent off regular scoops and cones all day and free mini-cones from 6-9 p.m. They serve ice cream, sorbet, milkshakes and floats. There is a list of custom sundaes like the "funkin gonuts" (your choice of ice cream with Krispy Kreme donut holes, syrup and sprinkles) and "Sundae Mornin'" (butter pecan ice cream, maple syrup, crushed pork rinds and orange sprinkles). There is even a sundae for your dog. The "Bow-Wowzer" is vanilla ice cream, topped with bacon bits and a milk bone dog biscuit.

Speaking of ice cream, Purple Monkey Boba Tea and Ice Cream has opened on University Drive in Durham. The company's Facebook page showcases delights like cream cheese pound cake with fruit on top.

Kamado Grille opens today at 11 a.m. in the old Lucky 32 location, 832 Spring Forest Road in north Raleigh. This restaurant specializes in food prepared in ceramic Kamado grills. It is a really great concept. The venue is full of light and offers a glimpse into the kitchen via large screens in the dining room. You can browse the menu, pay and place orders via tablets at each table. I recommend ordering the smoked gouda mashed potatoes!

If you love breakfast and brunch as much as I do, you will be happy to hear that The Egg & I will be opening its second North Carolina location in Cary across from REI on Walnut Street near the Crossroads Shopping Center. Representatives told me the restaurant is expected to open in late summer. The Egg & I's first North Carolina location is in Chapel Hill.

Carolina Glazed Doughnuts is targeting a June opening in south Durham, Triangle Business Journal reports. The business will be located in the Imperial Business Park off of Page Road.

Tropical Picken Chicken will be opening in the old Pronto Pasta location at Six Forks and Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, Triangle Food Guy reports.

Chanticleer Restaurant & Bakery is coming to the Wellington Plaza at the corner of Tryon Road and Cary Parkway. It will be located in the former home of Mahoney's. Chanticleer is a Florida-based chain that serves coffee, sandwiches and baked goods.

Wendell is getting a coffee shop. Grounds Cafe will open on Saturday, May 16, inside the new Wendell Falls development. The cafe will serve gourmet coffee, craft beer, sandwiches, salad and a build your own grilled cheese bar. It will also sell local products and fashion accessories.

Also coming soon, Provenance restaurant inside of the Skyhouse building at 308 S. Blount St. in downtown Raleigh. The restaurant describes itself on Facebook as "fine dining without the austerity. Real good food."

Fans of fresh lobster and food tucks will be happy to know that Cousins Maine Lobster food truck is making its Triangle debut on today at Chatham Hill Winery. The truck will start serving at 4 p.m. until they sell out. The truck will also be at Meet in the Street in Wake Forest on Saturday and the Downtown Raleigh Food Truck Rodeo on Sunday.

Speaking of food trucks: Greek Gussy's food truck is getting closer to opening its brick-and-mortar location in Durham. Food truck blogger The Wandering Sheppard reports that the signage is up at 2945-122 S. Miami Blvd.

{{a herf="venue-4"}}Cocoa Cinnamon{{/a}}, which started as a food truck, has launched a crowd-funding campaign for its second location. The company has set up an account on Community Sourced Capital in an effort to raise $30,000 by May 19. The program sells squares, which are something between a donation and investment. The squares, which are sold $50 increments, are do not return interest to lenders, but they can still be repaid in full. Cocoa Cinnamon owners say they will use the money for new espresso machines, building an outdoor patio and designing the space.

William and Company has opened next to Piebird in the Oakwood area of downtown Raleigh. The bar describes itself as a "cozy cocktail bar." It is currently open 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Also in Durham, a new craft distillery has opened. Pebble Brook Spirits produces apple pie liqueur. Their spirit is on shelves at many local ABC stores and should be available statewide in the coming months.
