FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An Amtrak train collided with a car at the intersection of Moore and Orange streets Friday evening, Fayetteville police said.

Police said a person drove an SUV around barricades in an attempt to cross the tracks about 1/4 mile north of the Fayetteville station. The SUV got stuck in a hole caused by roadwork in the area.

Witnesses said signal lights were flashing when the car approached the tracks at around 9:30 p.m.

Police said none of the people in the car appeared to have life-threatening injuries.

Police said the train, en route to Florida, was carrying 437 passengers. They were delayed while crews worked to remove the crushed car from the tracks. Railroad personnel said no one on the train was injured and the train did not sustain any damage which will impede its ability to complete the trip.
