Apex growth produces traffic issues

Posted — UpdatedAPEX, N.C. — With 1,000 homes coming to downtown, traffic and transportation issues have become a big issue among Apex officials and citizens.
To alleviate some traffic, city officials want to add a railroad crossing, but for safety reasons CSX railroad won’t approve the project unless some of the old crossings are closed.
The crossings would be required to close within 24 hours of a signed agreement.
“We find that’s not reasonable,” Mayor Keith Weatherly said.
CSX also wants to put a switching yard in the area. The yard would mean more parked railroad cars and more noise.
“Whatever is best for the community is what I want, but I also want a peaceful home,” nearby resident Jose Villasenor said.
Other nearby residents said they are torn on the issue.
City leaders hoped to reach an agreement with CSX last year, but the issue has been carried over to 2009. Leaders were to vote on the topic, but the issue was been tabled. Officials said they hope to hold the vote soon.
A CSX representative told WRAL News that they are working with Apex leaders to try and resolve the issue so both sides can move forward quickly.
“We’re confronted with some not good options, but we’ll have to choose the best one,” Weatherly said.
