I-440 East Reopened After Accident

Sky 5 video showed heavy traffic moving freely through all four lanes by 5:30 p.m. Delays still extended back to U.S. Highway 1.

All eastbound lanes of the Outer Beltline around Hammond Street were shut down right after the accident shortly before 4 p.m., Wake County officials said.

A vehicle failed to yield while merging onto I-440 from Hammond Road, setting off a chain-reaction accident that caught up four vehicles.

A box truck went over the embankment and landed on its roof. Crews had to use a tow truck to raise the overturned truck back onto the road.

Six people were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The closure extended from U.S. Highway 70 at Exit 298 to Rock Quarry Road at Exit 299. At one point, traffic was stopped as far back as Gorman Street, and slowdowns at U.S. 1. Three lanes were reopened by 5 p.m.
