AAA Study: Red-Light Cameras Reduce Number Of Crashes

A study for AAA Carolinas shows established red light cameras are doing a good job. In Charlotte, T-bone crashes are down 60 percent since cameras went up. In High Point and Wilmington, they are down 23 percent. In Rocky Mount, they are down 17 percent.

Data was not available for Raleigh's cameras, which just went up last August. The cameras not only reduce crashes, but the number of red-light violations that do not result in a collision except in Raleigh.

The number of violations and citations for running red lights is unchanged from before the cameras went up.

Currently, 11 North Carolina towns and cities have cameras, which issue more than 2,200 tickets a week.
