Drivers warned of lane closure at I-40/Clayton Bypass merge
North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are closing the left lane of I-40 at the Clayton Bypass from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Posted — UpdatedNorth Carolina Department of Transportation crews are closing the left lane from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The work was supposed to take place Sunday, but was delayed due to rain.
The lane shift is designed to ease congestion on I-40.
Since September, cones and barrels have marked a temporary fix, a move DOT says has resulted in drivers merging more quickly from the bypass onto I-40. Initial reports on the trial were positive. So, officials decided to make it permanent.
"(We) love it. It has made our commute much faster each day," Robert and Amanda Willis told WRAL News in December.
Traffic is a little slower approaching the Clayton Bypass on westbound I-40, DOT spokesman Steve Abbott said, but in the merge area itself, the change has improved traffic flow.
"Overall, the trip is shorter and faster," he said.
