MEBANE, N.C. — Two tractor-trailers were involved in an accident in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 in Orange County early Wednesday.

The Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer driven by Robert Branch rear-ended another 18-wheeler around 2:30 a.m. near the Buckhorn Road exit. Authorities said one tractor-trailer was pulling from the shoulder into the travel lanes when Branch's rig struck it..

Branch and a passenger in his truck's sleeper compartment were treated for minor injuries. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was also injured.

Authorities said both rigs were badly damaged. Crews had to shut down two lanes to clear the wreckage from the road. The roadway has since reopened fully to traffic.

Troopers said they planned to charge Branch with failing to yield to avoid an accident.
