GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Dozens of hogs were killed early Monday when a tractor-trailer overturned on 435 Dobbersville Road in Wayne County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the driver of the tractor-trailer, 24-year-old Daniel Raike of Richlands, was driving too fast, hit a curb and flipped the truck. Raike was not seriously injured, but 55 of the 176 hogs in the load he was carrying died.

"It appears the tractor-trailer was coming around a curve and lost control," Trooper Jeremy Holloman said. "We've got a lot of casualties."

Raike was charged with exceeding a safe speed.
