CARRBORO, N.C. — Employees with the Town of Carrboro could be fired if they don't get vaccinated in less than a month.

Currently, 70 percent of the town's 168 employees are vaccinated for the virus. Town officials said they are providing exemptions for health and religious reasons.

Those who don't qualify for the exemptions must get the vaccine, or face possible discipline for not adhering to the policy.

"We are saying that vaccination is condition of employment," said Town of Carrboro spokeswoman Julie Eckenrode. "We will follow our progressive discipline using unpaid leave or termination."

Employees must have the vaccine by Sept. 1.

Those who prove they have been vaccinated will receive a $100 bonus.

Wake County also announced on Wednesday that all government employees must be fully vaccinated from COVID-19 by Sept. 15 or be subject to weekly tests. In Orange County, all county employees will also need to provide proof of a coronavirus accination by Sept. 1 or take weekly COVID-19 tests.
