Have you been cooped up inside for too long because of the hot weather? Here's where to go.

When I stepped off the plane in Raleigh after spending the holiday on Lake Ontario with family, reality set in. I'm back in North Carolina and it's hot.

The Triangle is forecast to see a high of 102 degrees today. And after a couple of days back at home, cabin fever is starting to set in.

So here are some ideas:

1. Go out early. We've enjoyed breakfast picnics when it's hot and early morning jaunts to the playground. We were out the door before 8 a.m. this morning and had plenty of time to play before the baby's nap time rolled around.

2. Go to the pool. I have to believe that outdoor pools aren't so refreshing when the temperatures are so high. But we've got plenty of indoor pools in the area to keep you cool. Triangle Aquatics Center, Pullen Aquatics Center, Chapel Hill Community Center Indoor Pool, Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center and Edison Johnson Aquatic Center are among the region's indoor pools. Check our public pool database for links and more information.
3. There are lots of indoor places to play from inflatables to indoor playgrounds. Check our indoor playgrounds and inflatables resource page.
4. Check out some of the regular performances and storytimes at Triangle stores. Many are listed on this resource page. You'll also find activities and storytimes at libraries.
5. We're lucky to have lots of museums in the area. While you may have been to the same museum a gazillion times, it's always worth checking out their regular daily programs. I especially like the storytimes, meet the animal programs and short movies at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, which is free. Check our museum, historic sites and zoo page for more.
6. Make some cool food. I've always wanted to do more with watermelon than just eat it. So I think it's time to try some watermelon recipes. There are plenty available at local markets and stores. Here are some watermelon recipes ideas. Watermelon popsicles sound good to me.
7. Don't forget all the free (and cheap) summer movie series for kids at local theaters. Check our free and cheap summer movie database for details.
7. Stay hydrated and safe when you go outside. Duke Medicine offers a few tips here on sunscreen, hydration and swimming safety.

What are you doing to stay cool?
