HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — A toddler died Sunday after being struck by a four-wheeler that his father was operating in their backyard, Holly Springs police said.

At about 12:30 p.m., the 18-month-old was hit by a four-wheeler on Bass Lake Road, Police Chief John Herring said.

Witnesses said the child was struck after darting in front of the four-wheeler and that his head hit concrete when he fell.

The child was transported to WakeMed for treatment and later flown by helicopter to Duke University Hospital, where he later died.

Herring said he doesn’t anticipate filing charges in the accident.

More details, including the identity of the victim, haven't been released.
