Today@NCCapitol (Sept. 22): Medicaid votes expected

Both the House and the Senate are scheduled to take up a bill revamping the Medicaid health insurance system on Tuesday. The House Rules Committee is also due to take up bills dealing with deer farming and legislative appointments.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today@NCCapitol for Tuesday, Sept. 22. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and around state government.

HOUSE: The state House is scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. The chamber is scheduled to vote on a bill that revamp and largely privatize the Medicaid health insurance system for the poor and disabled and expand the state's economic incentives offerings. The Senate gave tentative approval to the economic development bill Monday night.

SENATE: The state Senate meets at 2 p.m. The chamber is expected to vote a second time on the economic development bill expanding the Job Development Incentive Grant program. And, like the House, it is due to take up a measure revamping Medicaid.

RULES: The House Rules Committee meets at noon. Among the measures on the calendar is a farm bill which would change the rules for deer farming in the state. The committee is also due to take up a new version of House Bill 272, which is now the annual legislative appointments bill.

FINANCE: The Senate Finance Committee meets at 1 p.m. and is scheduled to vote on a bill that would call for a $2 billion bond referendum next year.

DEATH: Rep. Jon Hardister, R-Guilford, is due to host a news conference at 10 a.m. on behalf of N.C. Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty, a group that advocates for abolishing executions on economic as well as moral grounds.

The news conference will feature Nebraska state Sen. Colby Coash, who will "explain why replacing the death penalty with life in prison without parole is becoming a major cause among conservatives across the county."
