Today@NCCapitol (June 2): Immigration issues on House Finance agenda

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today@NCCapitol for Tuesday, June 2. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and elsewhere in state government.

VETOES: After the state Senate voted to override Gov. Pat McCrory's objections to Senate Bill 2, the measure that allows magistrates to refuse to participate in weddings, both recent McCrory vetoes are in the hands of the state House. Speaker Tim Moore said Monday night that the chamber would likely take up both the magistrates bill as well as what has been dubbed by opponents as the "ag-gag" bill on Wednesday.

FIRST UP: Members of the House Finance Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. to take on a bill that would allow people in the U.S. illegally to obtain limited driving privileges and state-issued IDs. Backers of the measure say it would make roads safer, while opponents say it would be mean North Carolina was flouting U.S. immigration laws.

THE GOVERNOR: The Council of State will meet at 9 a.m. to approve dozens of routine land transfer matters. This will be McCrory's first appearance in public since the state Senate voted to override his veto of Senate Bill 2.

SENATE: The state Senate meets at 2 p.m. but has no votes on its calendar.

HOUSE: The state House meets at 3 p.m. While there are currently no votes on its calendar, the chamber has been taking bills onto the floor as they come out of committee. A measure dealing with abortion is also slated to return to the chamber from the Senate, meaning House leaders will have to decide whether to refer it for further vetting or schedule it for a concurrence vote.
