Today @NCCapitol (March 3): Expect a taxing day

After snow delays, the state House is ready to move quickly on its economic development bill. Gov. Pat McCrory continues public appearances in advance of his expected budget roll out this week.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Tuesday, March 3. Here's what's going on around the state legislature and elsewhere in state government.

The Governor: Gov. Pat McCrory will chair a meeting of the Council of State at 9 a.m. and make an appearance at the CED Life Science Conference in Raleigh around 12:30 p.m. The appearances could give him more chances to preview his budget proposal, which he is expected to roll out this week. During an appearance in Charlotte on Monday, McCrory said he aimed to follow through on raises for starting teachers.

On the Floors: The Senate has no bills scheduled for their floor session at 2 p.m. The House is scheduled to wrap work on a measure that secures funding for the Coal Ash Management Commission.

The Committee We're Watching: House Finance is scheduled to meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon. It is scheduled to take up a controversial proposal to revamp the gas tax as well as the major economic development package House leaders have been working on.

Spring Break: The state House is planning to take a spring break week in early April.

Back to School: A pair of Guilford County lawmakers have filed a bill suggesting legislators head back to school. "Each member is responsible for educating himself or herself about the needs of the public schools in the member's legislative district," reads House Bill 123, filed by Reps. Ralph Johnson and Cecil Brockman, both Democrats. The measure would give legislators up to four days of travel and per-diem allowance to visit schools in their districts.
