Today @NCCapitol (Sept. 24): Deer farming bill expected to come up in committee

A controversial deer farming provision is due to be removed from the farm bill. Meanwhile, the House and the Senate prepare to move through the last bills of the summer session.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Thursday, Sept. 24. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and around state government.

ADJOURNMENT: The Senate Rules Committee rolled out an adjournment resolution Wednesday that calls for the last day of this year's session to be Tuesday, Sept. 29. Lawmakers would return on April 25 under the bill. That's earlier than usual but would give lawmakers more time to complete work on the budget in advance of their June 30 deadline.

RULES: The House Rules Committee is scheduled to meet at 8:30 a.m. and take up roughly a dozen bills. Among the measures is the farm bill, which currently contains a controversial provision on deer farming. The committee is due to remove that provision from the bill before sending it on to the House floor, according to Rules Chairman Rep. David Lewis, R-Harnett.

Committee members will also review a bill moving the 2016 primaries up to March 15 before it is heard on the floor.

SENATE SESSION: Senators are scheduled to take up bills banning the sale of fetal tissue, outlawing sanctuary cities for undocumented immigrants and giving charter schools access to more money raised by public schools from grants and taxes. HOUSE SESSION: The state House meets at 10 a.m. It will take up the bill changing next year's primary date and a measure making several changes to the state's tax laws.
