Toasty temps on tap for Monday; rain arrives Tuesday

"The heat's going to be the big story today," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "It's going to be a pretty hot and sticky afternoon."

The high in Raleigh is expected to reach 93 degrees with the heat index in the mid- to upper 90s. There's no chance of rain, but that changes Tuesday.

Increasing moisture coming up from the Gulf of Mexico will stay west of the Triangle on Monday but will start to shift eastward on Tuesday, bringing a greater potential of clouds and rain.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday, parts of the region could get a quarter to three-quarters of an inch of rain, Gardner said.

The rain will help push temperatures down, however. The forecast calls for highs in the mid-80s on Tuesday and Wednesday.

""It's feeling a whole lot like August, and tomorrow we change things up," Gardner said.

The weekend is looking nice so far, with temperatures of 88 degrees forecast for Saturday and Sunday.

Keeping an eye on the tropics, Gardner said a disturbance developed off the coast of Africa overnight. An advisory from the National Hurricane Center gives it a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression by midweek.

"We're about to get into the peak of hurricane season, so is about time for there to be at least some activity," Gardner said, "However, forecasts are for it to be a fairly quiet season."
