The Senate polished off bills that would redraw the voting districts for members of the Wake County Board of Commissioners and the Greensboro City Council.
Senators also gave preliminary approval to a proposal to allow state regulators to accept existing state or federal rules to control air pollution at natural gas drilling sites instead of drafting stricter ones. The bill has been on a fast break, passing the House on Wednesday and poised for final Senate approval on Monday night, to beat the March 17 deadline to begin the process for issuing drilling permits.
A bill filed late Wednesday would eliminate Personal Education Plans for students not performing at grade level. Supporters say the plans are a waste of time, while the North Carolina Association of Educators say the plans are needed for students most in need of help.
Next week, in addition to drilling permits, moped regulation resurfaces in the legislature. Lawmakers last year began requiring operators to register mopeds, and the latest effort is to require insurance coverage on them.
