Speedway Christmas

Speedway Christmas at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord is a unique take on the traditional Christmas light show.

For Speedway Christmas, the public is invited to drive along the 3.75-mile course, including more than a mile of the speedway, and see more than three million sparkling Christmas lights. Visitors also can take part in other activities, including a petting zoo, Bethlehem village, horse-drawn wagon rides and photos with Santa.

The speedway shared some pictures with me, which I pulled together into an image gallery.

Tickets start at $30 per vehicle (maximum eight passengers). For $10 more, you can buy a fast pass so you won't have to wait as long to see the lights. (If you go, it seems that it might be worth splurging for that fast pass as lines can be long).

The event also includes screenings of some Christmas favorites starting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, followed by a second screening right after the first. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is this week. "Frosty's Winter Wonderland," "The Grinch" and "Mickey's Christmas Carol" are on the schedule Dec. 20 to Dec. 24. And "Frozen" is set for Dec. 29 and Dec. 30.

It's about 2.5 hours from Raleigh.
